Adult, Child, Infant CPR/AED and First Aid Certification Class

Location:
Student Recreation Center (SRC); MPR D
Cost:

Contact:

Campus Sponsor:
Campus Recreation

This hands-on skills training prepares you to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies for adults, youth, and infants. It also teaches the skills and knowledge needed to provide care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest through the safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Additionally the First Aid portion will help participants identify and eliminate potentially hazardous conditions in their environment, recognize emergencies and make appropriate decisions for first aid care. It teaches skills that participants need to know in order to provide immediate care of a suddenly ill or injured person until more advanced medical care arrives. These practices require strenuous activity. If you have a medical condition or disability that might prevent you from taking part in the practice sessions, or if you have any questions at all about your ability to participate fully in the course, you should discuss it with your health care provider before you start the course.

Lead Climbing Clinic

Location:
Student Recreation Center (SRC); Rockwall
Cost:
Semester or day pass required
Contact:
Kristyn Olsen, 512-245-8748
Campus Sponsor:
Campus Recreation

To sign up for a lead climbing clinic, it is required to have previously passed the Top Rope Belay test at the Rock Wall Climbing Center. In addition, you must be able to confidently climb on top-rope at the 5.9 level without falling.

Why do we require this set of skills?
Lead climbing is an advanced form of climbing that is not for the beginner climber. It requires a mindset and appreciation for detail that is not often achieved by someone new to the sport.
The clinic itself takes about 2 hours to teach and test. It is important that this time is spent on the safety aspects specific to lead climbing. In order to accomplish this objective, it is necessary that the climber already mastered and be able to adequately demonstrate the skill set involved in top-rope climbing.
We are eager for everyone to advance their knowledge of the sport of indoor rock climbing. However, this must be done in the safest way possible. If you are unsure whether or not you are ready for lead climbing, please feel free to call the Rock Wall at 512-245-4979. If you know you are ready, then we are eager to help you on your journey down the climbing trail.
