San Marcos, TX -- The Men’s Rugby Team just captured the Div. 2 State Championship title at the Texas Rugby Union Championships held March 1-2 in San Marcos, Texas. The Texas State Renegades dominated the competition Saturday and Sunday with a victory over University of North Texas 55-12 in the semi-final and over University of Dallas 57-3 in the final.
The 2-day final four consisted of the top men’s competition in the state including: Texas State, University of Dallas, North Texas, and San Angelo State.
The rugby team is a Sport Club affiliated with the Campus Recreation department at Texas State. It has been representing the university in intercollegiate rugby competitions since 1983, with the last state championship in 1987. The team practices and competes at the West Campus Fields.
With this win, they qualify to advance to the Western Regional Championships on April 5th, held this year in Ft. Worth, Texas. They will meet former National Champions and two-time Runners-up, University of Northern Colorado in the first round.
